50.000 spectators for the world record!
There are 500 days left until the start of the European Championship that will be held in Germany from 10th - 28th January, 2024.
Host cities: Dusseldorf, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Mannheim and Munich. Special event will be in Dusseldorf, where the Germans will try to break the record with 50.000 spectators in the Merkur Spiel-Arena.
The world record was also set in a German football stadium: 06.09.2014. 44,189 fans watched game between Rhein Neckar-Lowen and HSV Hamburg.
Game opener at the EURO 2024 will be playedin Merkur Spiel-Arena. The Merkur Spiel-Arena, previously known as the Esprit Arena, the LTU Arena, and as the Dusseldorf Arena is a multifunctional football stadium in Dusseldorf. The stadium holds 54,600 sitting places and has a retractable roof. Its special heating system allows the stadium to stay warm even during the peak Winter season.
''With the EHF EURO 2024 and especially in Dusseldorf, we want to give as many people as possible the chance to experience top handball live'' - said Mark Schober, Chairman of the Board of the German Handball Federation.
For the first time, 24 teams in just one host country are playing for the continental title, and the opening game on January 10, 2024 is set the benchmark as a world record.
